Made-for-TV movies tend to lack subtlety, but ABC's Bill W. recounts the ills of alcoholism in cries and whispers. Woods is engrossing in an Emmy-winning turn as heavily mythologized stockbroker Bill Wilson, who defeated his own addiction and cofounded Alcoholics Anonymous during the Depression. The story has the poignancy of a Frank Capra yarn without the dogmatism, and showcases a versatile cast, especially the doleful Sinise and Garner.
EXTRAS A featurette in which the actors and crew speak about Wilson's ''tremendous abilities'' offers no new insights.
