Beware, children, 6/6/06 is upon us...and some are capitalizing on the evil date. 'Strummin' With the Devil,' a bluegrass tribute to Van Halen, and black-metal compilation 'The Dark Psyche' (retailing for an obvious $6.66) are both out that day. And Slayer who were set to kick off a tour June 6 before having to postpone it because of one member's gallbladder surgery have dubbed it the ''National Day of Slayer.'' But if you prefer your Satan old-school and uncorrupted by marketing, check out these earlier dances with the devil.
DMX
IT'S DARK AND HELL IS HOT (1998)
The cover art isn't as gory as his follow-up, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood
of My Blood, but on his debut album, DMX barks menacing rhymes that
compare the rough ghetto streets to the bleakest corners of hell.
CHARLES MANSON
SINGS (2006)
When someone rereleases the folkie musings of a psycho killer and his
Family, there are clearly demonic forces at play. We can't in good faith
recommend these LSD-soaked tracks; you'd have to be on drugs to stomach
his philosophizing.
DANZIG
6:66 SATANS CHILD (1999)
Glenn Danzig owes his career to the devil (''Check my ID, see who I am/6
and 6 and 6 is my name''). Other Danzig albums include Demonsweatlive,
Blackacidevil, Lucifage, and I Love Puppies (kidding about that last).
THE LOUVIN BROTHERS
SATAN IS REAL (1960)
An antidote to all this helter-skelter. This rousing gospel album, on
which the Appalachian brothers pose with the devil on the deliciously
campy fire-and-brimstone cover, will exorcise your evil spirits.
