What a Way to Make a Living

A vocal coach explains the art of accents -- How he changed the voices of Heath Ledger, Julia Roberts and more

When A-listers need to learn an accent, or lose their lilt, they turn to one man: Sam Chwat.

Heath Ledger
Chwat worked on set to help the Aussie drawl like a Southerner in Monster's Ball. ''We were in an actual electrocution chamber. Creepy!''

Julia Roberts
''She was fresh out of Georgia'' and sounded it when Chwat prepped her for the Mystic Pizza audition. ''I was impressed. She was Eric Roberts' sister!''

Shakira
The Colombian turned to Chwat for her first songs in English, on 2001's Laundry Service. ''Every word had to be painstakingly de-Latinized.''

Jude Law
''He was so eager,'' says Chwat of the Brit's first attempt at an American accent (for 1997's I Love You, I Love You Not). ''He took to it beautifully.''

Robert De Niro
Improv helped him hone his Appalachian cadence for Cape Fear. ''He'd make phone calls in the accent. You'd be surprised who's ordering pizza.''
