With its Hollywood locale, überglam characters, and plenty of tawdry nooky, Tilly Bagshawe's 2005 debut, Adored, had romance junkies hailing the second coming of Jackie Collins. The follow-up, Showdown doesn't veer far from the slick formula, with England and California ranch country subbing for Tinseltown. The protagonist is American cowboy (and Brad Pitt doppelgänger) Bobby, who falls for impetuous British teenager Milly while training her daddy's horses. Their transatlantic romance is thwarted by sleazy racing tycoons, catty tabloid wars, and a never-ending parade of stable strumpets. It's all diverting enough, but forgettable — horses just aren't as sexy as Hollywood.
