Mo' Mega (2006)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Release Date: Jun 13, 2006; Lead Performance: Mr. Lif; Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Jeffrey Haynes has never played dumb; he broke out of Boston as a battle MC rhyming ''thesis'' with ''telekinesis,'' and soon became one of rap's sharpest political voices. He lightened up a bit last year on his fine side project, Black Dialogue, by the Perceptionists, and continues to diversify on this solo set, Mo' Mega, his first since 2002's apocalyptic concept LP I Phantom. His riffs on the industry hustle and groupie hygiene are funny. But as usual, it's his more outraged political rhymes, enunciated over producer El-P's barrel-chested beats, that you'll replay.
