MOVIES
+ Out of the smoking ashes of Tim Burton's and Johnny Depp's latest projects may rise a murderous barber. That's right: Burton's long-planned adaptation of the Tony-winning musical Sweeney Todd. It all started to jell when the director's Ripley's Believe It or Not, with Jim Carrey, stalled over budget and script problems, and Depp's next movie — the prison-break thriller Shantaram — landed in limbo after director Peter Weir dropped out. That allowed Burton to turn his attention back to Todd — which he first reportedly signed on to direct in 1992 — and means Depp might get to put the skills he honed in '80s bands like Rock City Angels to good use. But what about Todd's Broadway cast? ''Johnny Depp is a good guy to lose a job to,'' jokes star Michael Cerveris.
