+ Out of the smoking ashes of Tim Burton's and Johnny Depp's latest
projects may rise a murderous barber. That's right: Burton's
long-planned adaptation of the Tony-winning musical Sweeney Todd. It all
started to jell when the director's Ripley's Believe It or Not, with Jim
Carrey, stalled over budget and script problems, and Depp's next
movie the prison-break thriller Shantaram landed in limbo after director
Peter Weir dropped out. That allowed Burton to turn his attention back
to Todd which he first reportedly signed on to direct in 1992 and means
Depp might get to put the skills he honed in '80s bands like Rock City
Angels to good use. But what about Todd's Broadway cast? ''Johnny Depp is
a good guy to lose a job to,'' jokes star Michael Cerveris.
