MAGIC SPELLING

MAGIC SPELLING
The mogul's most notable projects, from the Old West to 90210

THE GUNS OF WILL SONNETT (1967-69)
Old vet Walter Brennan and then hottie Dack Rambo searched the Old West for Dack's dad, a legendary gunfighter, in an intriguingly dark, revenge-themed Western.

RUN, SIMON, RUN (1970)
Burt Reynolds starred as a Native American fresh out of jail, searching for his brother's killer in this tough little telepic, which was ahead of its time in its treatment of ethnic issues.

CALIFORNIA SPLIT (1974)
Spelling was an executive producer of this dandy Robert Altman-directed theatrical flick starring George Segal and Elliott Gould as gamblers on the loose. Think Ocean's Two.

FAMILY (1976-80)
One of the best dramas ever about the pleasures and stresses of a close-knit clan, with layered performances from Sada Thompson, Meredith Baxter, and Kristy McNichol.

VEGA$ (1978-81)
Spelling let his Starsky and Hutch writer (and future Miami Vice creator) Michael Mann develop this Robert Urich vehicle about a PI. The show helped propel Mann from TV to film.

DYNASTY (1981-89)
The ultimate '80s nighttime soap, Dynasty found Spelling in his best ostentatious element, overseeing glittery, gaudy catfights, lusty affairs, and the pouffiest hairdos in TV history.

BEVERLY HILLS, 90210 (1990-2000)
Spelling and Darren Star crafted the iconic teen saga, making stars out of Luke Perry and Tori Spelling, and turning Shannen Doherty into a love-her-or-hate-her It Girl.

MELROSE PLACE (1992-99)
Star's guys-and-dolls in an apartment complex was flailing until '93 when Spelling brought in his secret weapon, Heather Locklear, and the show became claw-sharp and campy.

AND THE BAND PLAYED ON (1993)
The discovery of AIDS was dramatized through Spelling's gift for conveying information via storytelling that humanized, but never minimized, its seriousness.

7TH HEAVEN (1996-?)
The endlessly (maybe literally) kooky Camden family saga finds warmth and humor — both real and surreal — in a religious setting that allows for heavy issues and heavy petting.
