Feeding the Monster (2006)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Release Date: Jul 11, 2006; Writer: Seth Mnookin; Genre: Nonfiction; Publisher: Simon & Schuster

Seth Mnookin is an expert at dissecting the inner workings of creative organizations — just look at Hard News, his damning take on the Jayson Blair-era New York Times. Granted unparalleled access to the Red Sox front office, the longtime Boston fan sketches the definitive portrait of the suits who assembled the 2004 World Series-winning squad. The problem: Enough ink has already been spilled on the subject to dye the Charles River black. Sure, he solves a few mysteries and drops some new tidbits, but there's no ohmygosh moment. What's left in Feeding the Monster is solid reporting and writing — the kind that merely satisfies now, but ages very well over time.
