Should you head to the multiplex or just hit the books?
THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
Lauren Weisberger (paperback)
Anne Hathaway is more likable, and less potty-mouthed, as aspiring journalist Andrea Sachs, and Meryl Streep ecstatically embodies the villainous magazine matriarch in David Frankel's entertaining film, which glosses over Weisberger's self-satisfied moralizing and revels in the fluff and fun.
Last Word Frankel should have trimmed the film's protracted conclusion, but
Weisberger's repetitive tell-all is too long by half.
A SCANNER DARKLY
Philip K. Dick (paperback)
This sci-fi novel about drug use and conspiracy comes to life with
seriously trippy animation. Richard Linklater's dark, witty adaptation
highlights Robert Downey Jr. as scam artist Barris but muddles
Dick's lucid, streamlined storytelling.
Last Word The movie is visually addictive — try keeping your eyes off the ''scramble
suits'' — but doesn't have the resonance of Dick's eerie, cautionary
classic.
