At birth, the daughter of 15-year-old Hazel Crabtree is pawned off on neighbor Stacia Frett innocently reigniting a feud between two rural families. ''The only way I could have prevented the war,'' young Nonny remarks later, ''would have been to strangle myself with my own umbilical cord before I pulled my first breath.'' At age 30, with her marriage crumbling and hostilities between the Crabtrees and Fretts escalating, Nonny tries to mend fences. The female characters from resilient Stacia to Nonny's ''half crazy, all mean'' biological grandmother are drawn with humor and shrewdness. Though the plot of Between, Georgia mostly turns predictably, Joshilyn Jackson's tough Southern gals surprise and delight.
