Before his Emmy-winning TV series, Reubens' bow-tied man-child hee-hawed live at the Sunset Strip's Roxy Theatre in L.A. doing The Pee-wee Herman Show. Featuring elements eventually incorporated into Pee-wee's Playhouse eccentric sets, naughty puppets, a brilliant cast including the late Phil Hartman HBO's recording of the sold-out show reveals Reubens' slapstick at its pre-gentrified best, mixing adult humor (shoe mirrors to look up dresses) with ''educational'' videos (the ill-mannered Mr. Bungle), zany cartoons, and SNL-worthy music salutes. EXTRAS None.
