Manhattanite Judith Lee, a direct descendant of Korean aristocracy, is a well-educated snob. She also happens to be broke. Taught that the workforce is beneath her, Jude becomes a famous violinist's courtesan to maintain her privileged lifestyle. She also falls for a penniless grad student. It doesn't take a genius to figure out who she ends up with. Y. Euny Hong tries hard to create a biting satire, but Kept, her uneven debut, with its unsympathetic protagonist (''I am...ten times cleverer than such a lovely girl has any right to be. This has been the origin of all my life's sorrows''), reads like haughty chick lit posing in a serious book's dust jacket.
