Andy Statman, the ambassador of modern Yiddish folk music, and David Grisman, a mandolin innovator known for recording with Jerry Garcia, here apply bluegrass and jam-band approaches to Jewish melodies the way John Zorn's Masada use post-bop jazz. On New Shabbos Waltz, double mandolins spin inter-twining lines; tuba or slide guitar provides surprising counterpoint; and Statman's doleful, chortling clarinet sings Eastern European blues.
