Way back in 1964, Michael Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter) helped make a landmark documentary called Seven Up! about a diverse group of British 7-year-olds. Every seven years since, the cameras have returned to update their development. ''Trying to persuade them to do it is usually the most difficult part of the operation,'' admits Apted. ''There's still a residue of anger in the fact that they sort of got trapped into this at the age of 7.'' Now 49, the subjects are remarkably honest about their lives, their dreams, and the impact of the films. ''I've always maintained they are the worst kind of celebrity: the celebrity without money or privacy,'' Apted says. ''But we all feel bonded and joined at the hip by this experience. It's a bit like a family.''
