The Hoax (2007)

The Hoax is based on the true story of Clifford Irving, the 1970s writer who scammed the publishing world into believing that the reclusive Howard Hughes had granted him incredible access for an ''autobiography.'' The ensuing scandal made James Frey look like a minor-league fibber. ''I was really eager to find a script that had an eye for human behavior and observation of the way people actually interact,'' says director Lasse Hallström. Richard Gere shares his director's excitement over the material: ''It's this weird mix of serious drama and real humor, and it has a kind of Beatles-esque quality to it, like A Hard Day's Night.''
