''I'm so annoying, I'm ruining this movie!'' Drew Barrymore fretted while playing a neurotic New Yorker/unlikely singer-songwriter who reluctantly teams up with a has-been composer (Hugh Grant) to write a hit song for a Britney-esque pop idol in under a week. And the romantic-comedy star wasn't the only one tweaking an onscreen persona. ''There are a few scenes where Hugh's not just bumbling and charming,'' says Barrymore. ''He actually gets angry and there's frustration and he's desperate. So it's not just Boy Meets Girl, Boy Loses Girl, Boy Gets Girl, End of Film. There's something more behind it.'' And the ''more'' may be Drew stepping up to the microphone and belting out a tune. ''The sound engineer actually made my voice sound so nice that we had to muddy it up a bit later,'' she says. ''Usually, when I sing, people cry and their ears bleed.''
