In this adaptation of Mary O'Hara's classic novel My Friend Flicka, Alison Lohman stars as Katy, a feisty 16-year-old who befriends an unruly horse. ''She has that same strong-willed, wild, free spirit that this untamed mustang has,'' Lohman says of her character. ''It's what helps her find her way in life.'' And while the 26-year-old says one of the reasons she signed on to the project was to learn how to ride, Lohman's experience on location in Wyoming calls to mind the word brokeback — literally. ''By the second week, we had done so much trotting that my spine had compressed; I got a pinched nerve,'' she reports.
