'Vice' Squashed
Sorry, Michael Mann, but your big Miami Vice movie doesn't come close to
the original, primarily because of the casting. Jamie Foxx is okay as
Tubbs and Colin Farrell acted as though he were contractually obligated
to be there. Just goes to show what an underrated actor Don Johnson is.

Stumbling Blockbusters
''Booty and the Beasts'' (News & Notes) had to be one of the more
depressing articles I've read recently, given that it's heralding the
return of profitability to Hollywood's film companies. Am I the only one
underwhelmed by this summer's ''blockbusters''? Dull sequels, stale
'toons, comic-book tales, and unexciting laughfests: to paraphrase The
Simpsons' Comic Book Guy, ''worst summer movie season ever.''

Smokin' Gunn
Loved your profile of Tim Gunn (''Top Gunn''). I had the pleasure of
sitting next to Mr. Gunn on a flight to L.A. after Project Runway season
2 ended. Expecting only a gracious thank-you after telling him I am a
fan, I was amazed that he talked to me for several hours. Mr. Gunn is
not only impressive as a mentor on the show but he is an impressive
human being. Mama Gunn should be proud of such a wonderful man, and the
fashion world owes her a big thank-you.

Not-So-Excellent 'Adventures'
Adventures in Babysitting is one of my favorites (Movies). It's a
classic: funny, exciting, and with death- defying feats performed by
kids. Any remake starring fluffy celebutantes is not going to make the
grade.

Fair 'Lady'
M. Night Shyamalan's Lady in the Water (Movies) is his best yet. Lisa
Schwarzbaum fixates on the demise of the movie critic and makes it sound
more important than it is. The movie is an allegory for the state of the
world and the need to pull together to address its problems. At least
that is how I saw it: as a fairy tale with a moral that moved me. In a
summer of mediocre-to-terrible movies, this one is worth every cent.

Tickled 'Pinky'
Kudos for giving a shout-out to Pinky and the Brain, one of the most
clever animated series (DVD). I shot right out and got the set, as well
as Animaniacs, equally great. Do you have any idea if Histeria! and Tiny Toon Adventures will ever be released on DVD? To have the complete set
would be a true bonus!

OBSESSIVE FAN OF THE WEEK!
Michelle Welch of Madison Heights, Mich., just can't get enough of Alan Rickman. Since seeing him in the Harry Potter movies, she's enjoyed his charming manner in 12 other films (and at least one episode of The View). ''Give him the cover,'' she oh-so-modestly pleads. As she understands it, Rickman's fan base is ''almost as wide'' as Brad Pitt's. Guess that depends on your definition of ''almost.''
