INFAMOUS
STARRING Toby Jones, Daniel Craig, Sandra Bullock
WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY Douglas McGrath

A year after Philip Seymour Hoffman's Oscar-winning Capote, McGrath's rival Truman show, which was filmed around the same time, is ready for its close-up. But is there really more to tell about the author's life during the period he penned In Cold Blood? ''There's no way you can say everything there is to be said about him in one film,'' insists McGrath, who delves deeper into Capote's extravagant nightlife. His secret weapon is Jones, who embodies Capote like no one since...well, you know. ''You're thinking it's impossible that you could have someone who's just as brilliant as Hoffman,'' McGrath says. ''But just you wait.'' OCT. 13

INDIE FOCUS

49 UP
Way back in 1964, Michael Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter) helped make a landmark documentary called Seven Up! about a diverse group of British 7-year-olds. Every seven years since, the cameras have returned to update their development. ''Trying to persuade them to do it is usually the most difficult part of the operation,'' admits Apted. ''There's still a residue of anger in the fact that they sort of got trapped into this at the age of 7.'' Now 49, the subjects are remarkably honest about their lives, their dreams, and the impact of the films. ''I've always maintained they are the worst kind of celebrity: the celebrity without money or privacy,'' Apted says. ''But we all feel bonded and joined at the hip by this experience. It's a bit like a family.'' (Oct. 6)
