Let it not be said that Marshall doesn't know how to film a fairy tale -- remember that little one involving a hooker with a 24 karat heart? But becoming a grandfather has clearly softened the ''Pretty Woman'' director, because this time around, he's not only sticking to the book, but it's a young adult novel (by Meg Cabot) at that: the story of a 15-year-old San Franciscan (Hathaway) who faces tough choices when her grandmother (Andrews) tells her she's European royalty. ''I said a G-rated movie would be good for me now... but it was a little odd,'' admits Marshall, whose other adult fare includes the kinky comedy ''Exit to Eden.'' ''I raced downstairs in my house, rubbed all my 'Happy Days' scripts on my face and said, 'I remember this.'''
As for casting Hathaway in her first feature, Marshall jokes that actresses ''all look alike and act alike... but Anne is a little clumsy. She managed to fall off her chair [at the audition], and I said, 'Hire her!''' Adds Hathaway, ''I was able to be myself.'' In Hollywood, that's royal treatment indeed.
