REALITY BITS Dennis Tito, the California millionaire who paid $20 million to hop a Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station -- and sparked friction between the Russian and U.S. space agencies over this new form of extreme tourism -- wants to write a book about it, says his agent, Frank Weimann, who brought the 60 year old financial advisor to meet New York publishers last week.
Another high altitude adventure is already in the works. The William Morris Agency is shopping a proposed book by Lieutenant Shane Osborn, the Navy pilot who kept the U.S. spy plane from crashing as it plunged 8,000 feet toward the China Sea. The book -- which reportedly has a minimum bid of $250,000 -- has been described by publishing sources as '''The Right Stuff' meets 'Top Gun.''' It would detail the pilot and crew's near death experience and their 11 days in captivity on the island of Hainan.
'SEEING' EYE Cammie McGovern, younger sister of actress Elizabeth McGovern (''Ordinary People,'' ''The House of Mirth''), has sold her first novel to Scribner. ''The Art of Seeing'' is about the relationship between two siblings, one of whom becomes a well known actress. ''It's a really engaging, beautifully written novel about sisterhood and the personal ramifications of fame,'' says Scribner senior editor Gillian Blake, who acquired the book. ''Certain aspects are based on her life, but most of it is fiction.''
