Duchovny, who just finished eight seasons of deadpan delivery on ''The X-Files,'' ended up being funny without even trying. He didn't realize that one of the film's biggest laughs, in which his character grumbles that government types can't be trusted, was interpreted by test audiences as a wink toward his former series. (He will return, he says, only for an ''X-Files'' movie sequel.) ''Ivan called me from a screening kind of pissed off, saying, 'That line's not supposed to be funny; why are they laughing?''' Duchovny says he's glad he didn't recognize the obvious connection to his paranoid ''X Files'' character during filming: ''I would have ruined it. I would have hit the line too hard or winked or something.''

Reitman's been asked numerous times if there will ever be a ''Ghostbusters 3,'' but he says even if ''Evolution'' is a hit he won't be tempted to repeat the formula. ''We did two 'Ghostbusters,' and it's really tough to keep doing that,'' says Reitman. ''There were economic issues with Sony in doing a third, but the real big problem was creative. We could never get the script right. It's not like doing a fourth 'Lethal Weapon,' where you create a new bad guy, knock him down, tell a few jokes and then you're out.'' Nope, you've got to invent a whole new brand of slime.
