Phobia (2006)

EW's GRADE
C+

Details Release Date: Aug 08, 2006; Lead Performance: Breaking Benjamin; Genre: Rock

If ''Benjamin'' refers to singer Ben Burnley, he's clearly already broken. Nearly every track on the Pennsylvania hard-rockers Breaking Benjamin's third CD is a cry in the darkness of a cruel world. Lyrics like ''Borderline/dead inside/I don't mind'' (''Unknown Soldier'') and ''put me to sleep, evil angel/Open your wings, evil angel'' (um, ''Evil Angel'') are, frankly, on the lighter side of Phobia. But as pathological angst goes, it's expertly done, with expansive choruses and epic riffs — not that that matters, when, like, we're all going to die cold and alone anyway.
