COURTS
On Aug. 17, Mel Gibson, 50, pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor charge of DUI, stemming from the infamous July 28 incident in Malibu. He was sentenced to probation and one year in an alcoholism-rehab program.... Rapper Busta Rhymes, 34, was, well, busted Aug. 18 in NYC for allegedly attacking a man he claims spat on his car. Says his lawyer, who contends he should not have been charged: ''This is a payback from the NYPD.''... Antidote International Films has sued debunked novelist JT Leroy's publisher (Bloomsbury) and manager (Judi Farkas), and the woman who used the Leroy nom de plume (Laura Albert) on Aug. 11 in NYC. The company, which planned to adapt Leroy's novel Sarah, is suing for an unspecified amount, claiming fraud. Farkas and Albert could not be reached for comment.... Aw, say it ain't so. Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense), 18, was charged with DUI and marijuana possession Aug. 17 in L.A., a month after he crashed his car and suffered a broken rib. An arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 19; Osment could face up to six months in prison. His rep did not return calls.

TAXED
Attention, Oscar presenters: The golden days of blingy gift baskets are over. The Motion Picture Academy will cease the popular practice and has reached an undisclosed agreement with the IRS, which wanted taxes for handouts going back 30 years. Unpaid levies for the last three years alone are estimated to total $20 million.

Country singer Johnny Duncan, 67, who had a string of '70s hits with songs like ''She Can Put Her Shoes Under My Bed Anytime,'' of a heart attack, Aug. 14, in Fort Worth, Tex.... Duke Jordan, 84, a jazz pianist renowned for his work with Charlie Parker, of unspecified causes, Aug. 8, in Copenhagen.
