Five years ago, Rage Against the Machine replaced their departed frontman with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell to form Audioslave — and they've been coasting on his unmistakable vocals ever since. But the band's third CD Revelations marks the awakening of Tom Morello: Returning to the guitar-as-turntable style he patented with Rage, Morello pulls the band out of its generic aggro-rock rut. Despite some missteps (the grating funk of ''Broken City''), this comes close to fulfilling the promise of Audioslave's pedigree.
