My Favorite Scene: Jon Cryer

In the 1986 teen classic Pretty in Pink (now available on DVD in a new Everything's Duckie edition), Jon Cryer soft-shoes his way through Otis Redding's ''Try a Little Tenderness'' to woo Andie (Molly Ringwald). But the fancy footwork was just a warm-up for the moment the actor really treasures. ''It's the argument after the dance,'' recalls Cryer, ''because Duckie and Andie's relationship is really changing at that moment. I was really happy with the way that Molly and I played it. The dance scene was a mother, so I was exhausted and emotions were kind of close to the surface. As an actress, Molly kept stuff back, so I'd be wondering, When is she gonna start [emoting]?! But you see on film that it's all there. I learned a lot as an actor that day.'' Cryer credits writer John Hughes for encouraging spontaneity in rehearsal. ''The line 'Blane, that's a major appliance, that's not a name' — that was all me.''
