Glenn Ford 1916-2006

Bitter grifters, lovesick ranch hands, unraveling family men — Ford played them all in more than 80 movies. The Canadian-born actor, who died Aug. 30 at age 90, was known first for his oaters — although a ''Glenn Ford Western'' would come to encompass anything from standard cowboy fare to the Shakespearean Jubal (1956). Ford paused his career to serve in the Marines in WWII, returning to the screen to forge classics like Gilda(1946) and Blackboard Jungle (1955), with performances as varied as they were entirely genuine. Says Russ Tamblyn, his costar in three films: ''Most people that knew Glenn will just say, 'Wow, he was something else.' He wasn't your average man.'' —Gillian Flynn
