The titular phantom in Phantom is a mysterious, unattainable blonde, the obsession of a homely clerk (Alfred Abel). In a quasi-Vertigo twist, he falls for a trampy, femme fatale look-alike (the exotically named Lya de Putti plays both roles), and embarks on a crime spree. Prison and redemption follow. This melodrama shares a sophisticated visual acuity with Murnau's more famous Nosferatu, Faust, and The Last Laugh, but not their compelling oomph. EXTRAS A documentary by UCLA historian Janet Bergstrom demonstrates how some of the striking F/X shots were done.
