The way some Gilmore Girls fans reacted when Rory (Alexis Bledel) moved in with her grandparents and gave mom Lorelai (Lauren Graham) the silent treatment, you'd have thought creator Amy Sherman-Palladino had burned Stars Hollow to the ground. The series went on without the centerpiece witty banter between the leading ladies, although Gilmore Girls: The Complete Sixth Season shows it did so at a price.

On other fronts, Lorelai and fiancé Luke (Scott Patterson) drew closer only to descend into crisis, while Rory's romance with Logan ''Have a Drink'' Huntzberger (Matt Czuchry) went in circles. We see the downside of Rory's ambitiousness when she channeled her energy into DAR parties. Subplots like Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) and her 68 pounds of marijuana were cute, but no compensation for Rory and Lorelai's punchy antics. Ditto for new arrivals April (Vanessa Marano), the daughter Luke never knew he had, and neurotic dog Paul Anka, who seems to sense he'll never have a career like Happy's on 7th Heaven.

Thankfully, mother and daughter reconciled less than halfway through the season. Behind the scenes, however, Gilmore 6 ended less happily: Amy and executive producer Daniel Palladino aren't returning for the show's first CW season (a possible reason this set lacks extras?). Their replacements would do well to keep the focus where it belongs: on the gals.
