BACKSTORY What happens when your poor British parents give you a piano for Christmas hoping you'll become a genius musician and deliver the family from poverty? In Charlie's case, you try to form the next Oasis with your brother, Liam. After scoring a huge hit with the Charlie-penned tune ''You All Everybody,'' their band, Drive Shaft, completed a shame spiral by selling out (for a diaper commercial!) and breaking up. Drugs messed them up too; once Drive Shaft disbanded, Charlie resorted to petty theft to feed his habit. Nearing rock bottom, he went Down Under to beg his now clean-living brother to restart the band, but Liam declined. Devastated, Charlie hopped on a plane for the States and crashed — in more ways than one.

ISLAND LIFE SO FAR Dope, dope, Claire, and dope — those are the primary concerns of Charlie's exile. After nearly becoming a monster snack while trying to retrieve drugs from the airplane wreckage, Charlie got cozy with a pregnant Claire, though their relationship hit a snag when Claire-fixated Other Ethan nearly killed him. He survived, thanks to Jack, and got even by shooting Ethan dead. Alas, not long after the birth of Claire's son, Aaron, Charlie lost her trust when she learned he was keeping a heroin-stuffed statue of the Virgin Mary. The whole camp turned on Charlie because of his suspicious and reckless behavior while handling Aaron; in truth, his erratic manner was due to a series of surreal, as-yet-unexplained waking dreams. Charlie eventually aimed for redemption by tossing his drug stash in the ocean and helping Mr. Eko build a church. Though Charlie was in the hatch just before it exploded, he survived.

BURNING QUESTION FOR SEASON 3 ''Will Charlie and Claire consummate their relationship?'' asks Cuse.

WE PREDICT Since the island seems to have healing powers, our hunch is that the electromagnetic blast was instant, permanent detox for Charlie.
