The Western gets a fresh rinsing in writer-director David Jacobson's Down in the Valley, about would-be cowboy Harlan Carruthers (Norton) in the San Fernando Valley. Harlan's doomed relationship with Wood's Tobe drives the narrative, but at the expense of making her little brother (Rory Culkin) a vivid character.
EXTRAS
The apple doesn't fall far from the screenplay: Jacobson appears in a
Q&A in a snap shirt and boots and says the characters of Tobe and her
brother are ''very much like me and my sister growing up.''
