'The Journalist' and his wife

Tuesday

October 10

8-9:30PM
The Journalist and the Jihadi: The Murder of Daniel Pearl (HBO, TV-PG) We're all familiar with the tragic story of Daniel Pearl (pictured, with wife Marianne), the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped in 2002 by Omar Sheikh and subsequently murdered. In this compelling documentary narrated by CNN's Christiane Amanpour, Pearl's and Sheikh's lives are traced from their affluent childhoods to their fateful meeting in Karachi. Though interviews with former intelligence agents and Pearl's relatives and colleagues do not offer much new insight, they are a reminder of how and why things went so horribly wrong. As Marianne Pearl says, ''What a mess we've created.'' B+Jessica Shaw

8-9:30PM
Dancing With the Stars (ABC, TV-PG) The judges are pissed that Slater doesn't follow rules? Please — what with Emmitt proving that, in fact, it does not take two to tango, rules are hardly the issue...

SERIES DEBUT
8-9PM
The Fashion Team (TV Guide, TV-PG) ...but optimal sequinage totally is! The Team gamely keeps a straight face while dishing on Dancing's duds.

8-9PM
Gilmore Girls (The CW, TV-PG-D) Lorelai ''suddenly realizes that most of her emotional life has been based on doing and feeling the opposite of whatever her parents want.'' What is she, 15?

8PM-CONCLUSION
American League Championship Series Game No. 1 (Fox) Just in case you thought Standoff stood you up.

9-10PM
The Unit (CBS, TV-PG-V) We put toiletries in a Ziploc, but the Indonesian terrorist gets through with a bomb.

9:30-10PM
Help Me Help You (ABC, TV-PG-DL) You have to come! Look at the guest list: Jane Lynch, Jane Kaczmarek, Jonathan Katz, and Phil Rosenthal.

10-11PM
Boston Legal (ABC, TV-14-D) October is May/December month: Denny eyes Bethany, and Shirley flirts with Alan.

THE NUTJOB PROFESSOR
10-10:59PM
Law & Order: SVU (NBC, TV-14) Jerry Lewis will be a Munch's uncle (and a double rape/murder suspect). Hey, ya can't pick your family.

10PM-MIDNIGHT
Scream Awards 2006 (Spike TV, TV-14-SV) And by ''scream'' they mean ''geek'' as hottie hosts Rose McGowan, Rosario Dawson, and Marley Shelton pay tribute to all things sci-fi, horror, fantasy, and fanboy.
