Soft Machine (2006)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Release Date: Aug 22, 2006; Lead Performance: Teddybears; Genre: Electronica

The Swedish band's joyful rave-up ''Cobrastyle'' — which can be heard in commercials for Heineken and the WWE, among others — is the very distillation of sunshine. (The trio's former incarnation as the black-metal outfit Skull was less so.) Now Soft Machine delivers more of the giddy same, aided by guests like Annie, Iggy Pop, and Neneh Cherry. This is clearly music for the body, not the brain: The 'bears' ecstatic beats gleefully bypass the cerebral cortex and go straight for the pleasure centers.
