A 90-minute ventriloquist show seems more suited to old-time vaudeville than modern Broadway, but Jay Johnson: The Two and Only! exceeds its humble origins. Johnson, best known for playing Chuck and his dummy, Bob, on the '70s sitcom Soap, uses well-honed comedy bits and his impressive vocal talents to animate everything from finger puppets to disembodied heads. But it's in poignant monologues about his childhood passion for the art and the death of his longtime mentor that the man behind the voice emerges. Johnson's just as good when you can see his lips move.
