There's a reason we can spend eight times more to visit the theater than the movies and feel like we scored a fantastic bargain. For shorthand's sake, let's call it Cherry Jones. Happily, her Tony-winning turn as a nun hounding a suspected molester/priest — is she paranoid? Heroic? Both? — didn't pass into pure legend before some West Coast stints. John Patrick Shanley's Doubt lets character trump stereotype at every twist...with subtleties easily lost in vast spaces like the Ahmanson Theatre. But would I take a rear-second-balcony seat just to see Jones again? Doubtlessly.
