And how! In 1988, for Billy Wilder Speaks, German director Volker Schlöndorff interviewed the Oscar-winning mastermind behind Sunset Boulevard, Some Like It Hot, and The Apartment for an enviable 30 hours. Even at 81, Wilder gabs about his films and working with Dietrich (who did her own lighting), Lemmon, and Monroe (''a pathetic figure'') with the gusto of a wise imp. Best sound bite: ''Everyone in the audience is an idiot, but taken together, they're genius.''

EXTRAS
A Schlöndorff essay, and 70 minutes of additional interview footage.
