Ray Sings, Basie Swings grafts Charles' vocals from mid-'70s European concerts onto new studio takes by the present-day Basie Orchestra. So we get a dead-legend singer fronting a great leader's ghost band. The idea is icky. The arrangements pack punch but lack invention. Yet here's Charles singing classics like ''Busted'' and ''I Can't Stop Loving You,'' even covering ''The Long and Winding Road,'' at his expressive height.
