Who'd have guessed that beneath the face paint there lurked such a sensitive soul? On, Live to Win, his first solo album since 1978, Kiss frontman Paul Stanley has taken a dour turn, shedding his party-hearty preoccupations and glam-rock togs for mopey songs about lost love. The results are mixed: '80s hair-metal-style power ballads like ''Second to None,'' co-written with hitmaker Andreas Carlsson (Britney), are sleek and catchy, but there's far too much turgid post-grunge — more Fuel than Kiss. He's much better singing sleazy songs in platform shoes.
