Two of Hollywood's top casting directors, Janet Hirshenson and Jane Jenkins, worked on A Beautiful Mind, Mystic Pizza, and The Outsiders, and helped discover Paul Bettany, Julia Roberts, and Tom Cruise along the way. But don't expect anecdotes about couch jumping or, really, any other tell-all juicein A Star Is Found. (Calling the teenage Cruise ''warm and friendly'' or describing young Roberts' ''un-self-conscious sexuality'' is frustratingly pedestrian.) The authors still work in the business and seem more concerned with playing nice (check out their overuse of the word "beautiful"). Which is admirable, if dishonest. Rather, they (with co-writer Rachel Kranz) focus their clumsily organized and lazily researched book on the basics of the audition process, thereby missing an opportunity to talk about their rare position in the movie business, as women with power — specifically, the power to change lives.
