Chavez probably weren't the first mid-'90s band to have their knotty guitar textures and algebraic time signatures called ''math rock,'' but they might have been the best. The quartet, fronted by future Zwan guitarist Matt Sweeney, combined forlorn melody and athletic catharsis that hit a rare mood somewhere between finding your sweetheart and benching your weight. Better Days Will Haunt You, a two-CD retrospective of their career, comes with a DVD of videos and a tour documentary and should be homework for emo boys aspiring to be men.
