Nina Simone's singing was often so introverted that her tremulous, searching delivery which seldom heeded the rhythms of the band could teeter on soliloquy. A few of those remixing the 11 tracks on Remixed and Reimagined, (including Coldcut and Tony Humphries,) work against Simone's transformative powers of interpretation, blithely grafting house rhythms onto even her subtlest vocals. But those who stay appropriately low-key or bolster her rare workouts with more than big beats amplify her regal power.
