In this lush adaptation of E.M. Forster's Where Angels Fear to Tread, his first novel, widowed Lilia (a vibrant Mirren) marries a common (if dashing) Italian dentist (Giovanni Guidelli). When a new baby arrives, her late husband's family is compelled to interfere for appearances' sake, of course. Those who don't normally cotton to turn-of-the-century British sagas won't be seduced by this starchy dramedy (it's no Howards End). But Angels features superb performances by Mirren, Davis as the stuffy sister-in-law, and Rupert Graves as her forgiving brother.
