In The Harbor Boys, a sequel to 2003's The Speckled People, Hugo Hamilton again recounts his Dublin boyhood, this time describing the disappearance of his visiting cousin and the fatal feud between two local fishermen whose religious differences reflect Ireland's Troubles. But most of the action occurs between young Hamilton's ears, as he dwells on the contrasting personalities of his German mother and his bullheaded Irish nationalist da, who proudly refuses to speak English. While Harbor feels somewhat episodic, it's unified by Hamilton's all-consuming desire to escape, making this a universal tale of a teenager's restlessness.
