
FREEDOM VS. SECURITY? National Security Advisor Karen Hayes (Atkinson) and the new White House chief of staff (MacNicol) won't see eye to eye
THE PLAYERS Wayne Palmer (DB Woodside), whose brother, President David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), was assassinated early last season, has been sworn in. The ''untested and especially young'' Commander-in-Chief leans on his chief of staff (Peter MacNicol), ''a fairly draconian [man]...willing to sacrifice aspects of the Constitution for national security,'' says Gordon. However, National Security Advisor Karen Hayes (Jayne Atkinson) ''believes that giving up freedom is a far greater loss.'' So what's with all of the resemblances to current headlines? Demurs Gordon: ''I hope we're dramatizing things that make people think.''
