The silver lining for director M. Night Shyamalan? Even Steven Spielberg once made Always. Then again, Spielberg never cast himself in his own film as a writer whose work is destined to change the world. And Spielberg never condescended to early doubters, like Shyamalan does in an EXTRA six-part doc: ''Someone reads [the script] and says, 'I don't see it, I don't get it.' And [I] go, 'It's there.''' The ''it'' he was hoping to capture in Lady in the Water was the fairy-tale magic of The Princess Bride, but even an eclectic cast can't salvage this self-indulgent Never-ending Story.
