Pulling Another 'Fast' One

The director and writer are on board; now to convince the studio

''The Fast and the Furious'' is burning box office rubber, and the racy hit -- in which Paul Walker's cop infiltrates Vin Diesel's nefarious gang of drag racers -- is on the fast track for a sequel. Director Rob Cohen has reteamed with writer Gary Scott Thompson, and hopes Diesel and Walker will go along for the ride. ''The pressure to do a sequel has become intense,'' says Cohen, noting the $132 million gross. While a Universal spokesman says only that the studio is ''in talks'' to do part 2, and reps for the stars say their clients have yet to sign on, Cohen is moving forward. He knows just where to pick up the tale: ''I left it in a very indeterminate place, where you don't know whether Vin got away [or] what happens to Paul. So I certainly want to try to answer all those questions.'' Gentlemen, restart your engines.
