Everyone thought the quirky Aussie comedy ''The Dish'' would be a hit Stateside, but it disappeared almost as soon as it hit theaters this spring. What happened?
I think Warner Bros. threw it away, and they could have done really well with it. I suspect it's one of those films that's going to be rediscovered on video. The studio did exactly the same thing with ''Dead Calm'' [costarring Nicole Kidman] which they just threw away in the cinemas. People rediscovered it on video and then it became a big hit, but I have to say I was a little exasperated by the way ''The Dish'' was handled.
You appeared in director Peter Jackson's 1996 mockumentary ''Forgotten Silver.'' Why couldn't you convince your old pal to cast you in his latest movie, ''The Lord of the Rings''?
He did offer me a role in ''Lord of the Rings,'' but unfortunately I was unable to do it because I had other commitments. I'm very fond of Peter and I'm very keen to work with him. When he makes ''Lord of the Rings 7,'' I'm up for it.
Word has it that your great-great-grandfather helped burn down the White House during the War of 1812. Ever get funny looks going through Customs?
This is undocumented, but it is family lore. He was part of a group that came around through Canada and set fire to quite a part of Washington. But he probably did you Americans a favor because it's a much better building now. In fact I was invited to the White House and had a bit of a tour, but I was very, very quiet about it while I was there.
In a steel cage match between your Damien and a velociprator, who would win?
I would say the velociraptor hands down, but on the other hand, if you put my wife up against the velociraptor, there's no question. The raptor would be running in about five minutes. She's small, but lethal.
