Even for a group of kids willing to get funky with a pie, find erotic uses for a flute, and strip on the Internet, there are limits. Namely, doing it all again. As the 1999 comedy ''American Pie'' boinked its way to more than $100 million at the box office, Universal Pictures started salivating for a sequel. But the stars didn't necessarily want to go back for seconds. ''Sequels give me the willies,'' says Jason Biggs, who stars as the hapless Jim. ''We all had reservations.'' Not that it mattered: ''Pie'''s lead actors -- including Chris Klein (Oz) and Seann William Scott (Stifler) -- were under contract. As Eddie Kaye Thomas, who plays the brainy eccentric Finch, puts it, ''They could've wiped their a--es on a piece of toilet paper and I would have had to film it.''

Luckily for them, equally anxious Adam Herz, the first movie's screenwriter, agreed to write the sequel (on 81/2'' x 11'' 20 pound stock, we're relieved to report). Which means that this week, audiences will be treated to the further misadventures of the potty mouthed, undersexed, always embarrassed teens in American Pie 2, directed by J.B. Rogers (first assistant director on the original). The guys, along with returning female foils Alyson Hannigan (as band camp devotee Michelle), Tara Reid, Natasha Lyonne, Shannon Elizabeth, and Mena Suvari, are brought back together in a plot that finds them the summer after their freshman year in college. And while the pals may be older, they aren't necessarily any wiser -- at least not when confronting lesbians, the intricacies of tantric sex, and bras that refuse to unsnap.
