You've been sticking to your guns about not projecting a super sexy image. How hard is that to do with Christina and Britney running around half naked?
I'm only 17 and I'm not fully 100 percent comfortable with my body. They're 19 and 20. There's a lot of maturing between now and then, so I think they're able to get away with that. But it's true that sex sells, and people would rather see you wearing a miniskirt than a pair of jeans. But you've got to stick to your guns because there are always going to be people in the business who want to create controversy and do something you're not comfortable with.
Speaking of controversy, how do you feel about the anti Mandy Moore sites popping up on the Web?
Those are my favorites to go on! Some of those sites are better than the regular fan sites. If they really hate me that much, why are they taking that much time out of their life to make this elaborate website with all these separate bulletins and message boards and guest books? It's very amusing to see the reasons they don't like you and see the pictures that they've doctored.
On your first tour you opened for the Backstreet Boys. What do you think about AJ's stint in rehab?
You know, you have no time to deal with your personal life when you're as busy as they are. I mean, look at what's happened to him recently. His grandmother passed away -- someone who took care of him through his whole life -- and at the same time he's on a huge sold out world tour, they have a very successful record out, and there's never a moment to sit there and stop and grieve or just think about it and remember and have that time out to deal with something that traumatic.
How do you deal with your own grueling schedule?
You have to surround yourself with the right people who'll look out for you and aren't just out to make a quick buck. I have a great team, my parents travel with me on the road, so all I have to do is show up and do my job. And I do get to see my boyfriend [''That 70s Show'' star Wilmer Valderrama] a lot. We just had our one year anniversary. You have to make some compromises, but he's really good about flying out and meeting me, surprising me at the airport and coming to a show.
So, how are you feeling right now?
I'm very happy. But sometimes I think in advance too much, like, ''Oh my gosh, I can't believe what next week's going to be like.'' And I have to think, ''Mandy, just concentrate on today.''
