Natalie Merchant, a political singer herself, acknowledged Lennon's immeasurable influence. ''He was such an inspiration for those of us who have tried to blend pop and politics for the last 20 years,'' she explained. '''Imagine' really convinced me that a three-and-a-half-minute pop song could have incredible depth and meaning and importance to culture. It's very inspiring to know that such a powerful voice existed.''
And, perhaps most importantly, Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland upheld the timelessness of Lennon's vision. ''The ideas that he stood for -- his ideas of the brotherhood of mankind, the idea of love -- [cause his] music to continue to be relevant. No matter what decade it is, no matter what millennium it is, his ideas will always be important.''
